‘Man Seeking Woman’ is brilliant-ish. I was watching “Man Seeking Woman” recently, and I thought to myself, THIS SHOW IS BRILLIANT. It was episode six of this season, and in it, Jay Baruchel’s Josh is competing with his co-worker Rosa’s boyfriend for Rosa’s affections.

As is the way of the trippy “Man Seeking Woman,” which brings metaphors to life and takes the overused word “literally” literally, Josh is suddenly a candidate in a national campaign to win Rosa’s love. Cue CNN statistics and press conferences and everything we’re seeing these days in the news. Later, when Josh finally meets Rosa’s boyfriend, he’s not just a decent guy — he’s Jesus Christ in the flesh. Yes, stiff competition. Jesus, by the way, is played by Fred Armisen. OK, so THIS SHOW IS BRILLIANT might be a bit of overstatement. But I am consistently blown away by the inventiveness of “Man Seeking Woman,” which is the brainchild of Simon Rich. It may be one of the most imaginative single-person TV comedies ever made. Usually, experimental storytelling on TV provides a quick rush and then gets tiresome or feels gimmicky. But “Man Seeking Woman” continues to work. It’s smartly written, perfectly fitted with playful set pieces, well cast, and pretty wise when it comes to love.
